Challenge

FN's Sustainable Development Goals commit the grocery industry to halve food waste per capita and reduce waste in the value chain before 2030. Every year, one-third of all food globally is discarded. SPAR has therefore set an ambitious goal: a 70% reduction in food waste by 2025. Together with Forte, SPAR is exploring how new technology and smart use of data can help reduce food waste, provide better customer experiences, and increase profitability.

Solution

Forte has collaborated with Spar to develop a new feature in the SPAR app that allows customers to find discounted items that are close to their expiration date in their local stores.

The feature builds on SPAR's project to explore new ways to discount and display items in their stores. Now this information is digitally available in the app – with a complete overview of discounted items, sorted by store and product.

Results

The food waste at SPAR was reduced by approximately 5% in value in 2024 compared to 2023, which corresponds to a reduction of about 10 million Norwegian kroner.

6.2 million discounted items were sold in 2024. At the same time, the losses on discounted items were reduced by 5 million Norwegian kroner from 2023.

The result is due to the fact that the shelf life of discounted items was reduced until sale. This meant that the items could be sold before a larger price reduction was necessary - well aided by the visibility from the app.

Status:

  • 1 million sessions from 2024 to today

  • 375,000 users

  • 45% of users return to the pages

  • 90,000 users on the service

  • 55% returning users

  • 8 million Norwegian kroner increased revenue from discounted items compared to the previous year

One of the biggest challenges we face in society is that we waste too much food. This applies not only to consumers but also in stores. By 2025, SPAR has set ambitious goals to reduce food waste by a full 70 percent. One of the measures to achieve this goal is the implementation of a new feature in the SPAR app.
